We at Tranquility Bay Hotel are huge fans of Marathon’s Turtle Hospital, which works tirelessly to rehabilitate injured sea turtles while educating the public through outreach programs and tours of the rescue facility. Recently, The Turtle Hospital was fortunate to receive a pregnant Hawksbill sea turtle who was found severely injured in St. Croix, USVI. The staff worked tirelessly to save “Good Harbor,” named for the beach on which she was found, however the turtle’s ailments proved too critical to overcome and she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, October 2nd. However, a shining silver lining was announced: veterinarians at The Turtle Hospital were able to rescue a total of 58 eggs from Good Harbor, which have been put into incubation beneath transplanted sand from St. Croix. With any luck, staff at The Turtle Hospital may find themselves airlifting a generation of baby Good Hopes back to their homeland of Good Hope Beach, St. Croix. In the meantime, Marathon visitors are encouraged to stop by The Turtle Hospital, located at 2396 Overseas Hwy, Marathon, FL (MM 48.5) to take a tour of the facility and learn more about the hospital’s rescue efforts and outreach programs.

This week’s weather looks to be a continuation of last week’s fickle forecast, with scattered thunderstorms predicted to break up the sunshine for the next seven days. Tuesday looks to be one of the wettest, with a 60% chance of precipitation all day. Thursday should be clearer, and might be the perfect day to steal away to either Sombrero or Coco Plum beach for a few rays of sun. Going into the weekend the rain looks to be sticking around, with precipitation hovering at about 50%. This is a great week to venture out with an umbrella and explore some of Marathon’s best sites, like the Dolphin Research Center or the Turtle Hospital. Or why not suit up and check out some of the great dive spots offshore? After all, a little rain never hurts if you’re busy underwater! We like the Tilden Scuba Center, which even offers dive classes for children.

On his recent trip to the Keys, Florida Governor Rick Scott made sure to pay a visit to Marathon’s Turtle Hospital, where the governor helped release a once-injured 30-pound sea turtle named “Sas” back into the wild. After being rescued by a fisherman who found Sas tangled in a lobster trap line, the good folks at the Turtle Hospital made sure to give Sas the best in modern turtle medical treatments– something you and your family can learn firsthand about when you visit the Turtle Hospital for a tour. This incredible Marathon institution has been dedicated to the rehabilitation and re-introduction of sea turtles into the wild for over 25 years. Offering a wide range of educational programs, the Turtle Hospital is a must-see for anyone visiting Marathon. Stop in today and learn about these majestic creatures and what humans can do to protect and heal them!
The hospital offers guided educational experiences to the public daily 7 days a week. Please call 305-743-2552 for further information and reservations.
