Divers exploring the 189-foot shipwreck Thunderbolt in the coming months can mark the 30th anniversary of the Middle Keys gem being intentionally sunk 4 miles south of Marathon and Key Colony Beach.
Considered by the diving community to be the queen of the Marathon wreck fleet, the easily navigable “T-bolt” rests in 120 feet of water, providing advanced divers as well as spear fishermen an interesting deep site populated by hundreds of reef fish and pelagic species.
Before its intentional sinking March 6, 1986, the ship was stripped of all but a few pieces of equipment. Its most prominent features are a cable-handling reel centered on the forecastle at approximately 80 feet and an observation deck at 75 feet. Aft, the rudder and propellers sit at 120 feet. The stern was cut away to expose the hull’s interior.
Originally named Major General Wallace F. Randolph, the vessel was launched June 2, 1942, one of 16 sister ships built as mine planters to guard coastal minefields for the U.S. Army. However, it was never commissioned and the Randolph’s duties were transferred to the Navy. The vessel remained idle in a Naval Reserve fleet.
In later years, Florida Power and Light Co. used the renamed Thunderbolt as a cable layer for researching electrical energy and lightning strikes, and eventually donated the vessel to the Florida Keys Artificial Reef Association.
Thunderbolt is one of nine vessels included in the “Wreck Trek Passport Program,” which rewards advanced- and wreck-certified divers who complete a series of nine Florida Keys shipwreck dives featured in an official Florida Keys Wreck Trek logbook.
Until January 1, 2016, divers who complete the nine dives in the logbook earn a collage print as well as a chance to win dive equipment and accessories or Florida Keys dive and lodging packages. For details about the Florida Keys Wreck Trek, visit fla-keys.com/diving/wrecktrek.

Famous for extraordinary underwater beauty, the Florida Keys also are among the world’s top destinations for year-round bird watching. Avian rarities abound, and birders, outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers can enjoy native wildlife and tours in one of Florida’s most precious ecosystems.
Throughout the Keys, birders can pass by occasional freshwater ponds, tidal lagoons and undisturbed Florida Bay by Everglades National Park. Resident and migrating warblers, vireos, tanagers and thrushes share the habitat with white-crowned pigeons, year-round tidal waders and spring-nesting sea birds.
The 12-county, 116-site Great Florida Birding Trail opened in 2006 and was renamed the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail in 2011. The South Florida segment of the trail includes a dozen Keys native habitat stops such as the National Key Deer Refuge, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, Long Key State Park and Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote birders’ paradise located 70 miles off Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. For trail information, visit floridabirdingtrail.com/index.php/trip/trails/south/P100/.
In the Lower Keys, the National Key Deer Refuge’s 9,000-plus acres of mangrove forests, freshwater and salt marsh wetlands, pine rockland forests and tropical hardwood hammocks are an annual stopping point for thousands of migratory birds and a winter home to many North American bird species. The refuge lies off U.S. Highway 1 at mile marker (MM) 30.5 bayside on Big Pine Key.
At Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, located on Route 905 at MM 106 bayside, birders can view breeding populations of black-whiskered vireos as well as migrating species such as warblers, white-crowned pigeons, terns, noddies, boobies and other unique Keys shorebirds and songbirds. Rare sightings of the LaSagra’s Flycatcher, thick-billed vireo and Zenaida dove also have been reported.
At Long Key State Park at MM 67.5, mangrove swamp, mudflat, rockland hammock, beach and coastal berm habitats can be explored. At low tide, the Roseate Spoonbill may be spotted dipping its round-tipped bill into the shallows searching for a meal, joined by reddish and other egrets.
The Tortugas are the first dry land sighted by trans-Gulf migratory species, so migratory fallouts during late April and early May often become once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Birders have recorded 25-warbler mornings and regularly sighted an Antillean short-eared owl. Common sightings include frigate birds, peregrine falcons and the ruddy turnstone — and the Tortugas’ Bush Key is home to America’s only notable breeding colony of sooty terns.
Known for its underwater splendor, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, located at MM 102.5, offers birders nearly 3,000 acres of natural mangrove swamp, hardwood hammock and rocky coast. Walking trails lead birders to gray kingbirds, short-tailed hawks and other locals such as mangrove cuckoos.
From a perch at the Middle Keys’ Curry Hammock State Park, MM 56.2 oceanside, the Florida Keys Hawkwatch team monitors the southernmost migration flights of record numbers of peregrine falcons and other raptors in the continental United States. Hawk watchers count the thousands of buteos, accipiters, raptors and eagles that fly through the Keys as well as peregrine falcons, whose annual migratory numbers are thought to surpass any other location in the U.S.
Visitors can find guided and unguided walks, boat and kayak adventures to explore some of the Keys’ wildest places by visiting www.fla-keys.com/ecotourism.

Guests at Tranquility Bay are feline in touch with the resort’s wild side as they explore the landscaped paths and lush gardens of the grounds. Not only can they encounter colorful birds dancing around the palm trees, guests will also have a chance to meet Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy. These cutely-named characters are far from being Marathon’s latest line-up of stage-show singers; they’re the majestic mix of orange, tabby and white-furred cats who have made Tranquility Bay their home since being rescued from the local Keys Animal Hospital.
Under the loving care of local vet Dr. Dunn and our General Manager Bob, these four feline friends have become part of Tranquility Bay life, enjoying nutritious meals that are specially prepared for them during the day. When Bob is onsite, he can be spotted taking time out of his busy schedule to ensure each cat is receiving the level of nurture he or she needs. And don’t be surprised if you hear him calling out, “Marilyn” at 6:00 a.m. to feed his feline friend. We can assure you that he’s not a guest looking for his lost wife.
We asked Bob which cat is his favorite and he replied by saying that he loves them all and is so pleased that we were able to rescue them and provide a safe home for the cats. He added that it is amazing to see how much the guests fall in love with Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy. “We constantly receive emails from guests who want to check on their favorite cat,” Bob said. Children especially love to search for each cat during their visit with our cat finder guide.
Dr. Dunn also makes “house” calls and visits the cats at Tranquility Bay whenever he is needed. When asked what Dr. Dunn thinks about our cats, he responded, “I would say that the Tranquility Bay cats are probably some of the luckiest felines I know. They are well cared for and have a regular staff to tend to their every need in addition to a year round rotation of welcoming visitors to share their lives with. I always look forward to coming for house calls to not only attend to their medical needs, but to also get a mini vacation while visiting them in the most beautiful resort in the Middle Keys.”
Although they are cared for by the resort, the quartet of cats remain wild by nature and are defensive against other creatures that inhabit the Florida Keys, including snakes, possums, iguanas and raccoons. While guests can enjoy spotting Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy sunning themselves around the grounds, it is important not to pick the cats up for a cuddle as they will feel vulnerable and could naturally try to protect themselves.
Meet our furry friends
DUCKY: This is Ducky, the only male in the feline foursome and the oldest of the cats. Ducky has a distinguished orange tabby coat and loves to roll over to show off his tummy when guests gently pet him. He loves lazing around in the Florida sunshine, but when his paws get wet, he may become a little grumpy!
It’s therefore harder to find Ducky out and about during a tropical downpour, as he’ll return to his favorite retreat in the hotel lobby. Ducky gets his name from Duck Key where he was found abandoned. Just don’t arrange a play date for Ducky and Marilyn as he does not seem to like her much!
MARILYN: Meet Marilyn, the beautiful white cat peppered with a few black spots (including a little smudge on her cute nose). Marilyn’s favorite hang-out areas of Tranquility Bay are the back porches of units 16-24 where she is at her happiest lounging throughout the day.
She likes to be vocal, so it’s easy for guests to listen to all she has to say. With lounging around as one of her favorite past-times, Marilyn is definitely not a fan of being picked up. She is also not a fan of hanging around with Ducky, so it’s very unusual to see these two prowling around in pairs!
EMMY: Emmy is our stunning green-eyed tabby who has a yellow color running through her fur. She loves to feel pampered and prefers staying indoors than venturing out to explore the grounds, though when she does, it’s easy to spot her around units 25-34.
The heat can often be too much for Emmy, which is why she loves shady spots including indoor areas and cool porches.
SANDY: Last but not least, here’s Sandy. She’s the smallest of the four, yet certainly not the most quiet! Sandy will make it known when she needs attention by being vocal and swatting Bob’s foot to remind him when it is time for dinner.
Sandy loves the beach, which is why her name is so well-suited to her character. She loves the great outdoors and taking long walks along the sand, and is equally as comfortable relaxing on the back porches of units 74-78. Sandy likes to have plenty of space to herself, but the Tranquility Bay guests adore her.
Spend some time with the kids while at Tranquility Bay, trying to find each of our furry friends. Use our handy cat finder guide, to help you along the way and you can request a copy of our cat finder from the front desk of the hotel.
Further explore Marathon’s wild side
Beyond the grounds of the resort, Marathon has plenty of places for guests to further explore the wonderful wildlife of the Florida Keys. Calling all lobster lovers! If you’re planning a vacation in the Florida Keys at the end of July, you’ll be in for a treat when mini lobster season hits the waters around Marathon.
Lasting for two days on July 29th and 30th, mini lobster season brings together a host of lobster hunters, all clawing their way through the coastal waters surrounding the Keys to catch the first fresh lobster of the season. It’s a long-awaited time of year when the ocean is teeming with the popular crustacean because lobsters just love to live in warmer temperatures. So, if you’re after the freshest and tastiest lobster or you’ve yet to sample this culinary delight in the Keys, your taste buds will be tingling come the end of July.
Florida Keys lobsters, known as spiny lobsters, don’t have claws and their meat has a slightly chewy sweetness. The most popular way to enjoy lobster in the Keys is to order it grilled with melted butter or steamed and served with Cuban black beans and yellow rice. For the ultimate lobster indulgence, savor it while watching the beautiful Marathon sunset with a refreshing cocktail in hand.
