You can swim with dolphins at the Dolphin Research Center and learn all about the characteristics of this majestic marine creature.
Nature-lovers will also have fun at the Turtle Hospital which is home to rescued sea turtles and offers guided tours for kids to get behind the scenes and learn all about the rehabilitation programme. Kids will also love the Wild Bird Center which features a sanctuary and visitor center, searching for Key deer on Big Pine Key, snorkeling the crystal-clear waters during day visits to the island’s best beaches, and making a splash onsite in one of our family-friendly swimming pools.
Beautiful beach houses
Sprawl out in style this summer in one of our spacious two or three bedroom beach houses and cool down on your own private balcony overlooking the natural beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. With plenty of home-from-home luxuries, including flat screen TVs and DVD players in each room, your family beach house offers plenty of space for switching off and recharging after a lively day of family fun.

Couples and seniors look to plan their ideal vacation with a checklist of must-haves that undoubtedly include tranquility, laid-back adventure and uninterrupted sunshine. Visiting the Florida Keys in mid-April through mid-June is therefore an ideal time for escaping family spring break and summer crowds while still enjoying the subtropical heat surrounding the islands. During this time frame, children are back in school and couples descend on the island for some much needed romantic relaxation… plus additional savings during our off peak value dates!
With many attractions and activities to enjoy in Marathon during mid-April through mid-June, your vacation can be as lively or laid-back as you’d like it to be. In other words… do everything or nothing at all! In May, you can make sure mom is pampered on Mother’s Day (May 8th), or celebrate our heroes with a long weekend for Memorial Day (May 30th). But if you seek the ultimate in peace and tranquility, try our off peak periods for additional quiet time (and savings). Here are six other reasons that you surely won’t want to miss a little slice of tranquility, April through June.
Six ways to make the most of your romantic Marathon escape, mid-April through mid-June:
1) Choose one of our intimate guestrooms at Tranquility Bay overlooking the towering palms of our tropical gardens, or indulge in a private two-bedroom beachfront beach house and wake up to views of the Gulf of Mexico from your balcony and porch. Either way, a romantic escape with comfort and serenity await.
2) One of the most romantic excursions in Marathon is right on your doorstep at Tranquility Bay Resort! A setting sun and a balmy evening stroll through the resort’s tropical gardens will build your appetite for a romantic dinner for two at Butterfly Café, rated by TripAdvisor as Marathon’s number one restaurant. With Keys-style dining at its best, you can cuddle up together and savor the flavors of coconut shrimp, tropical salads, and Caribbean chicken on a breezy patio. Our Key Lime Pie is particularly good for sharing with your sweetheart!
3) While hand-feeding sharks may not sound very romantic, an amazing bonding experience awaits at Aquarium Encounters Florida Keys. Try the Coral Reef Excursion and you can not only hand-feed sharks and other predatory fish through a protective plexiglass barrier, but the memory (and photos) will last a lifetime!
4) Fall in love with our private beach which stretches across 2.5 acres of powder-soft sand to sink your feet into. TJ’s Tiki Bar will serve up your favorite ice-cold cocktails to keep you refreshed throughout the day. A setting sun is one of the most spectacular symbols of a romantic evening, so make sure to enjoy Florida’s finest natural beauty from our private beach.
5) Swim with dolphins and learn about these incredible creatures at Marathon’s Dolphin Research Center, or get up-close to sea turtles at the Turtle Hospital which is the world’s only licensed hospital that specializes in sea turtles. It even has its own turtle ambulance.
6) Finally, explore the beautiful underwater coral as you submerge a little deeper into the warm ocean during a dive or snorkel trip. Marathon is surrounded by some of the world’s best waters for diving with mysterious shipwrecks and stunning marine life to discover, just a few minutes away from our resort.

Wildlife adventures, spectacular sunsets, delectable dining, pristine beaches: these are just some of the reasons why Marathon, Florida is one of the most popular hot spots for an unforgettable family vacation. To help you make the most of your precious time away together, we’ve highlighted ten of the top reasons why families love Tranquility Bay Resort:
1) Spacious Family Beach Houses
At Tranquility Bay Resort, you will never fall short on space in one of our two or three-bedroom beach houses. Designed with spaciousness and luxury in mind, each beach house boasts its own private porch and overlooks the sparkling waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Offering a relaxing “home away from home” atmosphere, everything your family needs is under one roof, including laundry facilities, a fully-equipped kitchen and a super comfortable living room complete with a 42-inch plasma TV.
2) Three Sparkling Pools
Much of your family time in Marathon will center itself around water, whether in it, on it or lounging around it. As you stroll through the lush, landscaped gardens surrounding your beach house, you’ll soon discover one of three sparking pools, each beckoning you to take a dip and cool down. The largest of the three is a beautiful lagoon-style pool for all ages. There is also an adults-only pool and a more intimate pool near our Tropical Garden Guestroom area. Your little ones will be endlessly entertained splashing around and practicing their swimming style under the tropical skies of the Florida Keys.
3) Private White Sand Beach
Within steps of your beach house, you’ll soon feel your toes sink into powder soft white sand on our private beach. Clean, peaceful, and safe, our Tranquility Bay Resort beach is the perfect haven for the whole family to unwind, have fun and dip in and out of the crystal clear ocean. Although the water entry access to our beach is small, you can still enjoy 2.5 acres of white sand beach overlooking the water. To help keep the beach in pristine condition, we have recently installed a seagrass fence which ensures seagrasses are kept in the ocean to continue their vital job of protecting the ecosystem, rather than mounting up on the beach.
4) A Sunset to Remember
No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without an evening watching the sun go down, and at Tranquility Bay your family can celebrate spectacular sunsets together from our private beach by TJ’s Tiki Bar. Try a tropical drink with plenty of frozen options for the kids. It’s a perfect spot to watch the tropical orange glow sparkle on the ocean before disappearing on the horizon, ready to rise again the next morning. Sunsets in the Florida Keys are renowned worldwide and will become part of your family’s special vacation memories.
5) Exciting Onsite Watersports
With a huge variety of water-based activities available in Marathon, there is every opportunity to make a splash and immerse the whole family into a fun, action-packed day. Onsite watersports can be arranged through our adventure concierge, from kayaking, Florida Keys fishing charters and leisurely cruises, to WaveRunner rentals and parasailing. The warm waters surrounding Marathon are teeming with tropical fish and beautiful coral waiting to be explored, making it a colorful paradise for scuba divers and snorkelers.
6) Dining for the Family
Families will love dining together in our award-winning Butterfly Cafe which features a children’s menu and a delicious range of local delicacies. The restaurant opens at 6:00 p.m. to suit little ones needing an early bedtime. The light, airy space of Butterfly Cafe provides the perfect atmosphere for family dining, or you can dine outdoors on our breezy patio. For light bites and lunch, try TJ’s Tiki Bar right by the beach which is a family favorite for lunch, refreshing drinks, smoothies and afternoon snacks. The kids will especially love our virgin Key Lime Daiquiri or Cookies n’ Cream Smoothie.
7) Putting Green
There is nothing quite like the peace and quiet of putting in the warm open air under the bluest of skies. At Tranquility Bay Resort, you can prepare for the golf course on our immaculate putting green designed by Nicklaus Design, and enjoy the indulgence of “me time” as you put against the stunning backdrop of palm trees and a sparkling ocean.
8) Standalone Cottages
Our family-friendly beach houses are ideal for creating the ultimate in privacy and exclusivity so the whole family can spend time together in a home-like environment. Each cottage is set within its own beach house unit so there are no communal hallways shared by other guests which suits many families on vacation, particularly those with younger children who won’t be disturbed by any noise after their early bedtime.
9) Nearby Family Attractions
Many families find the tranquil setting of the resort, with its private beach and swimming pools, difficult to leave. However, Marathon is home to a range of attractions to add even more fun to your family vacation, including the Dolphin Research Center which runs a variety of programs including the Dolphin Dip, a perfect way to plunge into unforgettable fun. Families can also meet sea turtles at the Turtle Hospital, discover shells, fish tanks and pirate costumes at Crane Point Hammock, and make friends with herons, owls, pelicans and egrets at the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center. Don’t forget to try the new Aquarium Encounters attraction where you can hand feed sharks and get up close and personal with other exciting sea creatures!
10) Budget rooms for families
Our new luxury single-level double queen-bed Tropical Garden Guestrooms offer seclusion and calm among a lush tropical landscape. Perfect for families looking for a budget-friendly stay, each guestroom is designed in conch style architecture, with understated luxury and graceful touches to add to the sense of serenity and relaxation.

Guests at Tranquility Bay are feline in touch with the resort’s wild side as they explore the landscaped paths and lush gardens of the grounds. Not only can they encounter colorful birds dancing around the palm trees, guests will also have a chance to meet Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy. These cutely-named characters are far from being Marathon’s latest line-up of stage-show singers; they’re the majestic mix of orange, tabby and white-furred cats who have made Tranquility Bay their home since being rescued from the local Keys Animal Hospital.
Under the loving care of local vet Dr. Dunn and our General Manager Bob, these four feline friends have become part of Tranquility Bay life, enjoying nutritious meals that are specially prepared for them during the day. When Bob is onsite, he can be spotted taking time out of his busy schedule to ensure each cat is receiving the level of nurture he or she needs. And don’t be surprised if you hear him calling out, “Marilyn” at 6:00 a.m. to feed his feline friend. We can assure you that he’s not a guest looking for his lost wife.
We asked Bob which cat is his favorite and he replied by saying that he loves them all and is so pleased that we were able to rescue them and provide a safe home for the cats. He added that it is amazing to see how much the guests fall in love with Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy. “We constantly receive emails from guests who want to check on their favorite cat,” Bob said. Children especially love to search for each cat during their visit with our cat finder guide.
Dr. Dunn also makes “house” calls and visits the cats at Tranquility Bay whenever he is needed. When asked what Dr. Dunn thinks about our cats, he responded, “I would say that the Tranquility Bay cats are probably some of the luckiest felines I know. They are well cared for and have a regular staff to tend to their every need in addition to a year round rotation of welcoming visitors to share their lives with. I always look forward to coming for house calls to not only attend to their medical needs, but to also get a mini vacation while visiting them in the most beautiful resort in the Middle Keys.”
Although they are cared for by the resort, the quartet of cats remain wild by nature and are defensive against other creatures that inhabit the Florida Keys, including snakes, possums, iguanas and raccoons. While guests can enjoy spotting Ducky, Emmy, Marilyn and Sandy sunning themselves around the grounds, it is important not to pick the cats up for a cuddle as they will feel vulnerable and could naturally try to protect themselves.
Meet our furry friends
DUCKY: This is Ducky, the only male in the feline foursome and the oldest of the cats. Ducky has a distinguished orange tabby coat and loves to roll over to show off his tummy when guests gently pet him. He loves lazing around in the Florida sunshine, but when his paws get wet, he may become a little grumpy!
It’s therefore harder to find Ducky out and about during a tropical downpour, as he’ll return to his favorite retreat in the hotel lobby. Ducky gets his name from Duck Key where he was found abandoned. Just don’t arrange a play date for Ducky and Marilyn as he does not seem to like her much!
MARILYN: Meet Marilyn, the beautiful white cat peppered with a few black spots (including a little smudge on her cute nose). Marilyn’s favorite hang-out areas of Tranquility Bay are the back porches of units 16-24 where she is at her happiest lounging throughout the day.
She likes to be vocal, so it’s easy for guests to listen to all she has to say. With lounging around as one of her favorite past-times, Marilyn is definitely not a fan of being picked up. She is also not a fan of hanging around with Ducky, so it’s very unusual to see these two prowling around in pairs!
EMMY: Emmy is our stunning green-eyed tabby who has a yellow color running through her fur. She loves to feel pampered and prefers staying indoors than venturing out to explore the grounds.
The heat can often be too much for Emmy, she now spends her time inside and loves finding a cool spot to relax.
SANDY: Last but not least, here’s Sandy. She’s the smallest of the four, yet certainly not the most quiet! Sandy will make it known when she needs attention by being vocal and swatting Bob’s foot to remind him when it is time for dinner.
Sandy loves the beach, which is why her name is so well-suited to her character. She loves the great outdoors and taking long walks along the sand, and is equally as comfortable relaxing on the back porches of units 74-78. Sandy likes to have plenty of space to herself, but the Tranquility Bay guests adore her.
Spend some time with the kids while at Tranquility Bay, trying to find each of our furry friends. Use our handy cat finder guide, to help you along the way and you can request a copy of our cat finder from the front desk of the hotel.
Further explore Marathon’s wild side
Beyond the grounds of the resort, Marathon has plenty of places for guests to further explore the wonderful wildlife of the Florida Keys. The Dolphin Research Center, Wild Bird Center, Nature Center of Crane Point Hammock, Aquarium Encounters, and the Turtle Hospital are all popular attractions for nature lovers. A paddle boarding trip on the water is also a fantastic way to get close up to the island’s colorful wildlife. Famous for extraordinary underwater beauty, the Florida Keys also are among the world’s top destinations for year-round bird watching. Avian rarities abound, and birders, outdoor enthusiasts and nature photographers can enjoy native wildlife and tours in one of Florida’s most precious ecosystems.
Throughout the Keys, birders can pass by occasional freshwater ponds, tidal lagoons and undisturbed Florida Bay by Everglades National Park. Resident and migrating warblers, vireos, tanagers and thrushes share the habitat with white-crowned pigeons, year-round tidal waders and spring-nesting sea birds.
The 12-county, 116-site Great Florida Birding Trail opened in 2006 and was renamed the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail in 2011. The South Florida segment of the trail includes a dozen Keys native habitat stops such as the National Key Deer Refuge, Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, Long Key State Park and Dry Tortugas National Park, a remote birders’ paradise located 70 miles off Key West in the Gulf of Mexico. For trail information, visit floridabirdingtrail.com/index.php/trip/trails/south/P100/.
In the Lower Keys, the National Key Deer Refuge’s 9,000-plus acres of mangrove forests, freshwater and salt marsh wetlands, pine rockland forests and tropical hardwood hammocks are an annual stopping point for thousands of migratory birds and a winter home to many North American bird species. The refuge lies off U.S. Highway 1 at mile marker (MM) 30.5 bayside on Big Pine Key.
At Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, located on Route 905 at MM 106 bayside, birders can view breeding populations of black-whiskered vireos as well as migrating species such as warblers, white-crowned pigeons, terns, noddies, boobies and other unique Keys shorebirds and songbirds. Rare sightings of the LaSagra’s Flycatcher, thick-billed vireo and Zenaida dove also have been reported.
At Long Key State Park at MM 67.5, mangrove swamp, mudflat, rockland hammock, beach and coastal berm habitats can be explored. At low tide, the Roseate Spoonbill may be spotted dipping its round-tipped bill into the shallows searching for a meal, joined by reddish and other egrets.
The Tortugas are the first dry land sighted by trans-Gulf migratory species, so migratory fallouts during late April and early May often become once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Birders have recorded 25-warbler mornings and regularly sighted an Antillean short-eared owl. Common sightings include frigate birds, peregrine falcons and the ruddy turnstone — and the Tortugas’ Bush Key is home to America’s only notable breeding colony of sooty terns.
Known for its underwater splendor, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, located at MM 102.5, offers birders nearly 3,000 acres of natural mangrove swamp, hardwood hammock and rocky coast. Walking trails lead birders to gray kingbirds, short-tailed hawks and other locals such as mangrove cuckoos.
From a perch at the Middle Keys’ Curry Hammock State Park, MM 56.2 oceanside, the Florida Keys Hawkwatch team monitors the southernmost migration flights of record numbers of peregrine falcons and other raptors in the continental United States. Hawk watchers count the thousands of buteos, accipiters, raptors and eagles that fly through the Keys as well as peregrine falcons, whose annual migratory numbers are thought to surpass any other location in the U.S.
Visitors can find guided and unguided walks, boat and kayak adventures to explore some of the Keys’ wildest places by visiting www.fla-keys.com/ecotourism.

The nearby Dolphin Research Center runs a variety of fun programs including the Dolphin Dip, a perfect way for mom to plunge into fun with the whole family nearby. There are flipper shakes, back rubs and interactive behavior for mom to splash about and enjoy with her new-found dolphin friend, and the whole experience is captured on camera by professional photographers.
2. A tempting tiki lunch or refreshing drink
During your Mother’s Day weekend at Tranquility Bay Resort, you’re guaranteed to take time out at TJ’s Tiki Bar for a midday tropical smoothie, a bit of lunch, a mid-afternoon snack, or a pre-sunset cocktail. Imagine you’ve just stepped out of the sunshine and into the shade for a cool down. You need a long, fruit-based cocktail to go hand-in-hand with this slice of paradise, so may we suggest the Blueberry Mojito? It’s bursting with flavor and packs a punch with its well-balanced blend of Stoli Blueberry, fresh mint and lime juice. Then there’s the Key Lime Pie cocktail which is an absolute must for savoring the original flavors of the Florida Keys. Key lime rum is blended with vanilla ice cream and rimmed with a Graham cracker crust; it is the ultimate taste sensation from TJ’s Tiki Bar!
